MagSafe is a magnetic technology from Apple, built into the internal engineering of latest iPhone models.  MagSafe was incorporated into the latest iPhones  to create a new ecosystem of accessories for easy attachment and faster wireless charging.

Do i have to have a magsafe charger to utilize the magsafe ?

yes. Only magsafe charger can triger the magsafe animation.
